Haiti Food Crisis
Video from Voice of America detailing the Haiti food crisis. Everything is imported, prices are very high, Haitian farmers have no support and cannot compete. This has resulted in riots, the resignation of the Prime Minister and the need to eat mud cookies.
Some comments about the crisis:
I was there in Operation restore democracy. That was almost a decade ago. We pumped 33 million dollars into the economy. Looks like it did nothing. Sad thing. I met many villagers who were really nice people, proud people and would give you anything. They would welcome me into thier home and ask if I wanted tea. It’s just an all around shame to see the ends of a corrupt gov and shameless gangs who turn to violence to make a living.
You cannot give handouts for a country to succeed. Handouts do not promote sustainable growth and these ”handouts” (as you choose to call them - they’re actually loans with interest)come with a price, the opening of markets, which many times are detrimental to poor farmers who can’t compete with the influx of goods, making the economy worse off and leading the country to be indebted for many years to come to bigger countries. Don’t mistake business for charity.
What are you talking about? No one mentioned “handouts”. I wrote about the tens of millions they have been given in grants. They have also been given loans and such investment, regardless of whether it is to be repaid or not does create sustainable business when it is correctly managed. You cannot simply create something out of nothing. They could have utilised the money to develop the infrastructure to encourage foreign investment and extract the gold thus creating a positive balance of trade
Not to mention that your comments about “opening of markets” is contrite. So what are you saying, business should not be encouraged as doing business with this country will bring about starvation?
The developement grants if used for mining, tourism developement and farming infrastrucutre could have created a huge influx of money into the country, a wealth of food, and a much more stable economy or country. The reason this has not happened is due to corruption and mismanagement. That is beautiful and we all love Che, but how to get Haitians to become self sufficient. It is a shame that the people have let this happen and continue for so long. The democratic system there is not working. This is sad!
